What does an Intimacy Coordinator do?

Advocate. Intimacy Coordinators are on set to protect and advocate for those performing scenes of simulated sex, nudity, and other types of intimacy. We do this by establishing performers’ boundaries through informed, consent-forward conversations during prep, and hold these while shooting. This means performers can be fully in the scene, rather than their mind lingering on whether they will be made to do something they are not comfortable with.

Facilitator. The Intimacy Coordinator facilitates discussions with those involved in intimate scenes. Starting with conversations with the director to get a clear idea of their vision, then with performers to find out how they view the scene and their character within it. The Intimacy Coordinator works with all parties to tell the story in a way that does not break the established boundaries.

Choreographer. Intimacy Coordinators can assist in choreographing movement in intimate scenes with nuances rooted in storytelling and led by character choices.

Collaborator. An Intimacy Coordinator collaborates with all departments to ensure safety on set where needed (ie closed set protocols are being adhered to), comfort of performers (ie they are confident with their movement in their costume), and efficient working (ie scheduling sufficient rehearsal time with ADs).

Specialist. An Intimacy Coordinator’s kit includes items to help portray implied nudity such as modesty garments and nipple covers. It also includes barriers like cushions and pilates balls to help performers confidently simulate sex acts.
